Andys Skordis, composer selected in Category A of the International Accordion Composition Competition Jaume Padrós 2026

On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Jaume Padrós Montoriol, Acord Edicions, in collaboration with the Festival Mixtur, has announced in 2026 the International Accordion Composition Competition Jaume Padrós, with the aim of promoting the creation and dissemination of new works for accordion, as well as commemorating and highlighting his musical legacy.

On 8 March, the application period for Category A of this call closed. This category was intended to select a composer for the creation of a work for accordion and soprano duo or for accordion and cello duo.

To apply, participants were required to submit a biography of their professional career, as well as the score and recording of two original works.

The response to this call has been remarkable, both in terms of the volume and the quality of the proposals received. In this edition, a total of 218 composers from 48 nationalities took part: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Catalonia, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cuba, Cyprus, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Mexico, the Netherlands, Peru, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Singapore, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The high level of the applications made the jury’s deliberation particularly demanding. The jury was composed of Víctor Estapé, Mateja Zenzerovic, and Festival Mixtur, represented by Oliver Rappoport and Oriol Saladrigues.

After a thorough evaluation process, the jury agreed to select Cypriot composer Andys Skordis in Category A. The prize includes a commission for a new composition worth €2,000, which will be premiered at the Mixtur Festival 2026 and subsequently published by Acord Edicions.

Andys Skordis is a composer specializing in large-scale works and new music theater. He studied composition at Berklee College of Music and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, with additional studies in Karnatic music and in Balinese Gamelan. His work list includes over eighty works, ranging from operas, orchestral pieces, chamber music, vocal compositions, and Gamelan works.
